Today’s assignment was to learn how to make a skirt. The teacher had prepared a pattern in size 92 (2 yrs) because she wanted the students to be able to finish faster than with a full size skirt. Most of the details are still the same, only smaller in size.
After cutting out the pattern pieces, the students started sewing the front pockets. This picture shows the first seam already sewn, and a student cutting small slits in the seam allowance to be able to turn the lining of the pocket.

Nice environment. Seeing all your images brings back memories of my father who owned a clothing manufacturing business for many years. You have great skill in what you do.
ReplyDeleteThank you for your nice comment Stephan.
ReplyDeleteAnother lovely picture - love the detail of the girl's rubber band bracelets - they are popular here also at times. Making smaller sizes would mean they would need to be very accurate. Do they give the finished garments to family or friends or do they sell them? I agree with Stephan - a great skill set to have
ReplyDeleteWhen they have finished the skirt they may keep it or give it to someone. They don't sell them, though the school has a small store.
ReplyDeleteBut the teachers are discussing the posibility to have the class make the uniforms for the students that are in the restaurant program, so maybe next year the first-graders will do that instead of sewing samples.
That sounds like a great idea of an authentic task!
ReplyDeleteIt seems like the consumption of material is high, because its not possible to recycle the students product I suppose. I wonder how often you have to buy fabric and other materials? In my business (florist) we need to buy material at least ones a week and its a big part of planing the lesson.
I don't know how often they buy fabric and other material, but since the fabric won't perish like your flowers, they have a room where they keep stock. Some fabric in there is really old and dusty... ;)
ReplyDeleteOne big advantage of making smaller sizes is also that they use a lot less material.
