2, The classroom

This is the classroom for the first year students. There are 12 students, and only one of them is male. All of the students has their own industrial sewing machine, and three sergers to share.

  1. This is a lovely big and wonderfully light filled room to work in. I am guessing that 'sergers' are called 'overlockers' in English but I am not sure. Thanks for the great photo Linda

  2. Yes, the school moved here a few years ago, the teachers love these rooms since they are big and airy with good light.
In Swedish we call the machine an "overlock", but at least in american English it's a serger, as far as I know.

  3. Hi Linda!
Are the students get to keep treir sewing machine after examination? And in that case do they have to pay for it or not? I suppose that kind of "tool" is quite expensive.

  4. Hello Malin,
No, they don't get to keep the machines, the school will use them for many, many years. And at least when I went to school this type of machine doesn't work in a regular household, they require much more power, since they are real industrial machines.

  5. I see. I suppose that the student learn to take care of the machines but do they have skills to repair the machines if they broke? Is it part of the proffession to do that?

  6. Actually, no, they don't do much to take care of the machines. They only do simple things, as change the needle if it breaks, or remove lint and thread that may be stuck somewhere.
Every now and then a repairman comes along to check on all the machines.
